BASEMENT UPDATE | FRAMING, LIGHTING + A VIDEO

BASEMENT UPDATE WWW.THISMINIMALHOUSE.COM

HAPPY MONDAY, FRIENDS! We hope everyone had a great weekend! If you caught the post from this past Friday, then you've probably already seen our new lifestyle section where we're going to be sharing one of our favorite past times! Spending time outdoors with our children unplugged is the best place to be, so make sure you keep an eye out for those lifestyle, travels, and outdoor posts. We hope to bring all of our tips, tricks, and hacks to this space!

A lot of progress was made in the basement this weekend after our hike! We checked framing and recessed lighting off our our previous basement update post to do list. The breaker box also got a little tune up, removing all old wiring that was either one, not hooked up correctly, or two wasn't hooked up to anything at all. That was both a huge relief and necessity in order to add in our recessed can lighting. As far as layout goes, we opted for two recessed lights in the "hallway", and four recessed lights in the "bedroom".

We opted for recessed can lighting due to our low ceiling height. Also, we believe finishing the ceilings vs. spraying them would be a better finishing option, specifically for later if we use the finished spaces as bedrooms. Not only will it give a more finished look, but it will also cut down on noise from upstairs, AND because we don't want to mess with the current insulation.

Now that the framing and lights are finished for the hallway and bedroom, we can move forward and deal with the HVAC. We've done extensive research on HVAC options, and have concluded that a ductless mini split would be the best option for this space. In particular we are looking at this system

Here's a vantage point of the hallway and bedroom/secondary hallway.

If you've looked at the basement door and wondered why it has holes in it, make sure you watch the video at the end of this post!

Later down the road, we plan on replacing the light switches we installed out for dimming light fixtures. We only installed four in the bedroom, and it is the perfect amount, but for a more relaxed even mode, we think the dim option would be the best.

NOW for some additional basement fun, a progress video of the basement renovation in action. In this video we finished framing out the hallway/basement door wall, as well as adding in four recessed can lights. We also had to remove metal mesh that the previous owner installed on the door. We're assuming this was for security reasons as he lived here alone. The kids were so impressed with the removal, and with the lights! Their reaction is the best! Watch the video till the end!
